How many days can I be signed off sick?
After reviewing your medical evidence, our doctors can provide up to 7 days of sickness leave with your certificate.
If you are still unwell after the initial 7-day period, you may apply for a further sickness certificate for additional leave.
Can you get an online sick note?
Yes, you can easily get a sick note online in the UK. Different providers have different processes, either through appointments or by submitting video evidence. Some services, like ZoomDoc, even provide same-day service.
Can I get a sick note from a private GP?
Get a sick note online provided by: Private GPs, NHS GPs, Private and NHS Doctors.
What the difference between sick note and a self certification?
A sick note details your health condition and ability to work and is issued by a UK Doctor. A self-certification is a short form you fill out for brief illnesses, up to 7 days. You can find the form for self-certifcation on the HMRC website.
Why are there QR codes on medical letters and certificates?
Our medical letters and certificates have QR codes that can be scanned to verify the document's authenticity.
Once scanned, your personal online results portal is loaded, from where your medical letter can be reviewed and personal details confirmed.
Do you provide refunds?
We only provide full refunds if we are unable to provide a medical certificate.
Once our doctors have provided a medical certificate, we are unable to process a refund.
When will I receive my medical certificate?
Our team will review your evidence and provide you with your certificate on the same day that evidence is uploaded (between 9am and 9pm GMT, 7 days a week).

What does a sick note say?
The sick note you receive will include information about your medical issue, alongside advice on activities that you can perform at work when you return. It will also state the expected duration of your absence from work.
Sick notes can also be used to suggest ways that your employer can help you while in the workplace. These ‘reasonable adjustments’ can include:
- Workstation changes
- Work pattern or work hour changes
- A phased return to work, with fewer hours to begin with
- Additional support from managers and fellow employees
- A shift in day-to-day tasks to prevent further issueIf the employer cannot follow these reasonable adjustments, your sick note will state that you’re ‘not fit for work’.
Can you get a sick note online for free?
You may be able to receive a free sick note through the NHS, although this may take some time, depending on how busy your local GP is.
Sick notes through ZoomDoc cost £49, but you will be seen quickly, making it much easier to sign off work when you need to.
What is self-certification?
Self-certification is where you certify your own medical issues after taking 7 consecutive days off work. If you have a self-certification certificate, you do not need a sick note, but you may also not be able to request reasonable adjustments.
How much are doctors notes?
A rapid sick note provided by a doctor from ZoomDoc will cost £49.
You may also request a free sick note through your local GP, although you may be charged for this process.
Getting a sick note for an ESA claim
Are you making a claim for Employment and Support Allowance? You may need to provide a sick note for your application.
If you are unsure whether you require a sick note, speak to the Department for Work and Pensions or ask at your local job centre.
Do sick notes have to be from a GP?
Yes, a sick note must be signed by a GP or another relevant medical professional.
How long can a doctor give a sick note for?
The length of a sick note depends entirely on how long the medical issue may prevent you from working. Your doctor will be able to advise on how long your absence from work might be.
How to read the date on a sick note
The date should be included in your sick note and clear to read. Dates should show when the sick note was issued and how long you will be absent from work.
Extending a sick note
To extend a sick note, you will need to speak to your NHS or ZoomDoc GP.
Your medical issue will be assessed again, and an updated sick note will be provided for you to pass along to employers.
Can a doctor refuse to give you a sick note?
If a doctor assesses your medical condition and finds that you can perform your tasks normally, they may not be able to give you a sick note.
Can an employer override a doctor’s sick note in the UK?
If your employer has concerns about the validity of a sick note, they may seek a second opinion, or ask for more information.
Legally, though, if you have been certified to be off work by a doctor, the employer must respect the sick note and offer time off to recover.
How to send a fit note
To pass along your fit note to your employer, you can simply email or post it, or you can deliver it in person.
